What AI Certifications Cost in the UK

The exam fee is the smallest part of what an AI certification costs you. The rest is where budgets go wrong.

Direct answer

Entry-level vendor exams cost £80 to £100 in the UK. Associate exams run to around £150. Platform certificates range from £40 to £400. A funded apprenticeship costs the learner nothing. Add preparation time and a possible retake to every figure above.

Check if it is funded for you

Based on the AI and Automation Practitioner standard (ST1512), a Level 4 apprenticeship for people already in work. Funding rules described here are the England position and are set by the funding body.

Potentially free for you

The learner never pays. Employers potentially pay nothing either, and where the apprentice is aged 16 to 24 the government funds the whole cost even if the employer does not pay the levy.

Closing any gap. A levy transfer from another employer covers 100% of the cost. Unused transfer allowance is not carried forward at the end of the tax year, and it must be agreed before the apprentice starts.

From 1 August 2026 the government stopped adding the 10% top-up to new funds entering levy accounts, so there is less in the system than there was.

The fees, exam by exam

Microsoft AI-900 sits under £100. Microsoft AI-102 is around £150. Both are booked through Pearson VUE.

AWS AI Practitioner is around £80. AWS associate-level machine learning exams cost roughly double that.

Google Generative AI Leader is around £80. Google's associate and professional cloud certifications cost considerably more.

Platform certificates on Coursera and edX run from about £40 for a short course to £400 for a professional certificate series. Vendor prices move, so confirm before booking.

The costs nobody budgets for

The retake. A failed sitting costs the full fee again unless you bought an exam replay bundle in advance. Budget for one if you are nervous.

Preparation time. Twenty to forty hours of evenings has a real cost even though no money changes hands. Price it at whatever your time is worth.

Practice exams. The free learning paths are genuinely sufficient for the syllabus, but the paid practice questions are what most candidates say made the difference.

Renewal. Microsoft associate certifications need a free annual renewal assessment. Google certifications carry a fixed validity term. Missing either quietly costs you the credential.

How to get one cheaper or free

Microsoft runs virtual training day events that issue free exam vouchers. If you are not in a hurry, this is a legitimate route to a free sitting.

Ask your employer. Training budgets often go unspent, and an £80 exam is an easy approval compared with a course.

Financial aid on Coursera and edX is real and usually granted. It takes a fortnight and a short application.

All the major learning material is free. Microsoft Learn, AWS Skill Builder and Google's learning paths carry the full syllabus at no cost.

Comparing cost against what you get

A £90 exam that takes 30 hours is not a £90 decision. Treat it as a £90 fee plus a working week of evenings.

That comparison changes the answer for a lot of people. Thirty hours applied to a real task at work often produces better evidence than thirty hours of exam preparation.

The exception is when screening is your bottleneck. If you are not getting interviews, a named certificate that gets you read is worth the evenings.

If you are already getting interviews and failing them, a certificate will not help. Applied evidence will.

The zero-cost regulated route

A funded apprenticeship costs the learner nothing at any point. There is no fee, no loan and nothing to repay.

Employers who pay the apprenticeship levy fund it from money they have already contributed. Employers below the threshold pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24, and for anyone older the government funds 95 per cent.

The cost to you is around six hours a week for roughly 14 months. That is a larger commitment than any exam on this page.

It requires you to be employed, at any number of hours a week. Eligibility and funding rules are set by the funding body and can change.
