AI Salaries in the UK: The Real Picture
Share
Published AI salary figures are among the least reliable numbers in UK recruitment, and it is worth knowing exactly why.
Direct answer
AI salary data is unreliable because the same job titles cover very different work, many adverts omit salary, and survey samples skew towards London technology roles. What actually drives pay is responsibility, sector and location rather than the AI element itself.
Based on the AI and Automation Practitioner standard (ST1512), a Level 4 apprenticeship for people already in work. Funding rules described here are the England position and are set by the funding body.
Potentially free for you
The learner never pays. Employers potentially pay nothing either, and where the apprentice is aged 16 to 24 the government funds the whole cost even if the employer does not pay the levy.
Closing any gap. A levy transfer from another employer covers 100% of the cost. Unused transfer allowance is not carried forward at the end of the tax year, and it must be agreed before the apprentice starts.
From 1 August 2026 the government stopped adding the 10% top-up to new funds entering levy accounts, so there is less in the system than there was.

Why the published figures mislead
Job titles are inconsistent. Two roles called AI specialist can differ by ten years of required experience.
Many UK adverts omit salary entirely, so published averages are drawn from a self-selecting subset.
Survey samples skew towards London and towards technology companies, which are not where most of these roles are.
Vendor and course marketing quotes the top of the range as if it were the middle, which is where most of the inflated figures come from.
What actually drives pay
Responsibility. Whether you decide, advise or execute matters more than whether the work involves AI.
Sector. Financial services and technology pay above public sector and charity for comparable work, as they always have.
Location. London carries a premium, and the gap has narrowed but not closed with remote working.
Scarcity of the combination. Domain expertise plus AI capability is rarer than either alone, and that is where the premium sits.
Realistic expectations by route
Applied practitioner roles usually pay close to the role they grew out of. The increase comes when responsibility grows, not on qualification.
Data analyst and technician roles follow established analyst pay in that sector rather than an AI premium.
Engineering roles pay considerably more and expect a technical background built over years.
Anyone quoting you a precise figure for AI salaries in general is describing one slice of the market as if it were all of it.

How to judge an offer without a benchmark
Compare against the role you would otherwise be doing in the same sector and region. That is a real comparison.
Ask what the role's predecessor was paid, or what the band is. Many UK employers will tell you if asked directly.
Weight the responsibility rather than the title. A title with no decision rights rarely pays like one with them.
Factor in what the role lets you evidence next. A lower-paying role that produces a portfolio can be worth more over three years.
The honest position on AI and pay
AI skills raise your floor more reliably than your ceiling. They make you harder to replace in the job you already have.
That is worth more than most salary comparisons capture, and it does not show up in any published figure.
The people seeing large increases usually changed responsibility, not just skills. The skills enabled the change rather than causing it.
We cannot promise a salary outcome, and neither can any course or qualification.
Where UK pay data comes from and why it varies
Public sector pay is published in bands, which makes it the most reliable comparison available in this field.
Private sector figures come from recruiter surveys with self-selecting samples, weighted towards London and towards technology employers.
Regional differences remain substantial. The same role in Manchester or Leeds typically pays below the London figure quoted in national averages.
Compare against the role you would otherwise be doing in your own sector and region. That is a real comparison and a national average is not.
What to do with this
Do not choose a route on published salary data. It is too unreliable to base a year of your life on.
Do choose based on what work you want to be doing, and what evidence the route produces.
Do ask directly about bands and progression in interviews. It is a normal question and evasion is informative.
A funded route removes cost from the decision entirely, which changes the calculation more than any salary estimate.
Key takeaways
- Job titles are inconsistent, so published averages compare unlike work.
- Survey samples skew towards London and technology companies.
- Responsibility, sector and location drive pay more than the AI element.
- Domain expertise plus AI capability is the scarce combination.
- AI skills raise your floor more reliably than your ceiling.
Frequently asked questions
What do AI jobs pay in the UK?
Too widely for a single figure to be honest. Applied roles pay close to the role they grew from. Engineering pays considerably more and expects a technical background.
Why are AI salary figures unreliable?
Job titles cover very different work, many adverts omit salary, and survey samples skew towards London technology roles.
Will an AI qualification increase my salary?
Not directly. Pay follows responsibility. A qualification can help you reach the role that carries it, which is where the increase comes from.
What drives pay in these roles?
Responsibility, sector and location, plus the scarcity of domain expertise combined with AI capability.
How do I judge an offer?
Compare against the role you would otherwise do in the same sector and region, and ask directly what the band is.
Does London still pay more?
Yes. The gap has narrowed with remote working but it has not closed, particularly in specialist engineering roles.
Should I choose a career based on AI salaries?
No. The data is too unreliable. Choose on the work you want to do and the evidence the route produces.
What is the realistic benefit of AI skills?
They make you harder to replace in the job you already have, which is worth more than most salary comparisons capture.
The funded route, in figures
Figures are the England position. Levy-paying employers usually draw the whole cost from the levy they already contribute, so they pay nothing extra. Employers below the £3 million pay bill threshold pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24. For an older apprentice the government funds 95 per cent, and a levy transfer from a larger employer can cover the rest. Eligibility and funding rules are set by the funding body and can change.
Where to go next
If cost is part of your calculation, the funded route removes it entirely for anyone employed, at any number of hours a week.
