Free AI Courses With a Certificate: Which Are Real

Free with certificate means two different things, and the difference only becomes clear at the point you want the certificate.

Direct answer

Some providers issue a certificate free on completion, including Google, IBM and several university platforms. Others let you learn free and charge £40 to £400 for the certificate. Both are legitimate. Neither produces a qualification, because nothing in either is externally assessed.

Check if it is funded for you

Based on the AI and Automation Practitioner standard (ST1512), a Level 4 apprenticeship for people already in work. Funding rules described here are the England position and are set by the funding body.

Potentially free for you

The learner never pays. Employers potentially pay nothing either, and where the apprentice is aged 16 to 24 the government funds the whole cost even if the employer does not pay the levy.

Closing any gap. A levy transfer from another employer covers 100% of the cost. Unused transfer allowance is not carried forward at the end of the tax year, and it must be agreed before the apprentice starts.

From 1 August 2026 the government stopped adding the 10% top-up to new funds entering levy accounts, so there is less in the system than there was.

The two models, and how to tell them apart

Free to complete with a free certificate. Google and IBM run courses on this model, as do several vendor learning platforms. Nothing is charged at any point.

Free to audit with a paid certificate. This is the standard Coursera and edX arrangement. All the learning is free and the certificate sits behind a paywall.

You can usually tell before enrolling by looking for the word audit on the enrolment page. If it is there, the certificate costs money.

Financial aid exists on the main platforms and is genuinely granted. It takes a fortnight and a short application, which is worth knowing if the certificate matters to you.

What free certificates are actually worth

They get you past keyword screening on an applicant tracking system. That is a real benefit when you are applying at volume.

They signal that you spent your own time on the subject, which matters most when you are changing field and have nothing else to point at.

They do not evidence competence. Nobody assessed your work, and every recruiter knows how these courses are marked.

They will not survive the interview question about what you have applied. Prepare an answer to that separately, whatever certificates you hold.

The free ones actually worth your evenings

Vendor documentation and learning paths. Microsoft Learn and AWS Skill Builder are free, comprehensive and written by the people who built the products.

Google's short AI courses, which are well constructed and finishable in two evenings.

University platform courses, which go deeper and are free to audit. The reading is the value and the certificate is optional.

Model provider documentation on prompting. It is free, it is short, and it is better than most paid prompting courses.

There is more on this in our guide to Free AI courses in the UK.

What to do the week after you finish

Pick one recurring task at work and apply what you learned to it. Not a category of work, one specific task you do weekly.

Time ten instances before you start and ten after. That measurement is the evidence a certificate cannot give you.

Write down the prompt or the process that worked. That reusable asset is worth more than the certificate to your employer and to you.

Tell your manager what you found. This is how a free course turns into a conversation about funded training.

Where free stops being enough

Free courses do not create protected time, and lack of time is the commonest reason they go unfinished.

They do not produce external assessment, which is the thing that makes a qualification portable between employers.

For someone employed, at any number of hours a week, a funded apprenticeship supplies both. It costs the learner nothing and makes the weekly hours a condition of the funding.

That is a genuine commitment of around 14 months, which is why it is worth checking eligibility before assuming it is the right answer.

Key takeaways

  • Google and IBM issue certificates free. Coursera and edX usually charge for them.
  • Look for the word audit on the enrolment page to tell which model applies.
  • Financial aid on the main platforms is real and usually granted.
  • Free certificates get you read. They do not evidence competence.
  • Apply one thing to one real task and measure it, or the course was entertainment.

Frequently asked questions

Are there free AI courses with free certificates?

Yes. Google, IBM and several vendor learning platforms issue a certificate at no cost. Check the enrolment page, because terms change.

Why do some courses charge for the certificate?

The audit model gives the learning away and sells the credential. It is legitimate and it means you can get the entire education for nothing if you do not need the certificate.

Can I get financial aid for a paid certificate?

The major platforms grant financial aid on application. It takes around a fortnight and a short written application.

Do employers accept free certificates?

They accept them as evidence of interest. They do not treat them as proof of competence, because nothing in the course is externally assessed.

Which free AI course is best?

Vendor learning paths from Microsoft and AWS go deepest. Google's short courses are the most finishable. All three are free.

Is a free certificate enough for a career change?

Rarely on its own. Pair it with one measured improvement to a real task at work, which is what an interviewer will actually ask about.

How long do free AI courses take?

Short vendor courses take five to ten hours. University platform courses run four to twelve weeks at a few hours a week.

What is better than a free certificate?

A qualification assessed by someone independent against a published standard. The funded apprenticeship route provides that at no cost to the learner.

The funded route, in figures

Level 4Apprenticeship standard ST1512
14 monthsAround six hours a week, online
£0Cost to the learner, always
£0Employer cost for ages 16 to 24. Older apprentices are 95 per cent government funded, and a levy transfer can cover the rest
No minimumWeekly hours to qualify

Figures are the England position. Levy-paying employers usually draw the whole cost from the levy they already contribute, so they pay nothing extra. Employers below the £3 million pay bill threshold pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24. For an older apprentice the government funds 95 per cent, and a levy transfer from a larger employer can cover the rest. Eligibility and funding rules are set by the funding body and can change.

Where to go next

If you have finished the free courses and want something externally assessed, the funded route is the next step and it costs you nothing.
