Free Online AI Courses Worth Your Evening
Share
There are thousands of free AI courses. About eight are worth the evenings, and the ones at the top of search results are usually not among them.
Direct answer
The best free AI material comes from the model providers and cloud vendors themselves, because it is current and written by people who built the systems. University platform courses go deeper. Short introductory courses are good for confirming interest.
Based on the AI and Automation Practitioner standard (ST1512), a Level 4 apprenticeship for people already in work. Funding rules described here are the England position and are set by the funding body.
Potentially free for you
The learner never pays. Employers potentially pay nothing either, and where the apprentice is aged 16 to 24 the government funds the whole cost even if the employer does not pay the levy.
Closing any gap. A levy transfer from another employer covers 100% of the cost. Unused transfer allowance is not carried forward at the end of the tax year, and it must be agreed before the apprentice starts.
From 1 August 2026 the government stopped adding the 10% top-up to new funds entering levy accounts, so there is less in the system than there was.
Part of our guide to Free AI Courses in the UK: What Is Genuinely Free.
The vendor material, which is the best of it
Microsoft Learn carries full learning paths for its AI certifications, free, with hands-on exercises. It is the syllabus rather than a summary of it.
AWS Skill Builder does the same for the AWS AI certifications, including free digital training covering the practitioner syllabus.
Model providers publish prompting and usage documentation free. It is short, current and better than most paid prompting courses.
None of these are marketed as courses, which is why they rarely appear at the top of a search for free AI courses.
Short introductory courses
Google's introductory AI material is well built and finishable in two evenings, with a certificate at the end.
It suits someone who wants to confirm whether the subject interests them before investing anything larger.
The prompting sections are solid. The responsible use sections assume a regulatory context that is not the UK one.
Treat it as orientation rather than training. That is what it is good at and it does that well.
University platform courses
Free to audit on the major platforms, with the certificate behind a paywall. The learning is the free part and it is the part that matters.
They go considerably deeper than vendor material and take weeks rather than evenings.
The technical ones assume Python. Check the prerequisites honestly before committing four weeks.
Financial aid is real and regularly granted if you want the certificate and cannot pay for it.
There is more on this in our guide to Free AI courses in the UK.
What to avoid
Courses recorded in 2023 and never updated. Prompting techniques from then are actively obsolete and you will learn habits to unlearn.
Anything with countdown-timer pricing. It is marketing rather than education, whatever the content is like.
Long video series with no exercises. Watching is not learning and completion rates on these are dismal for a reason.
Anything promising a salary outcome. No credible provider promises that because none of them can control it.
How to judge a course before you start
Check the last updated date. Anything in this field older than about a year has content you will need to unlearn.
Look for exercises rather than video length. A four-hour course with tasks beats a twelve-hour one without.
Check whether it assumes a technical background. Many free courses say beginner and mean beginner developer.
Read the syllabus rather than the sales page. The syllabus tells you what is covered and the sales page tells you how it feels.
What free courses do not give you in the UK
None of them sit in the UK qualifications framework, so none of them are comparable to a Level 2, 3 or 4.
They also assume a US regulatory context in their responsible use sections, which is the part a UK worker most needs and least gets.
Fill that gap with ICO guidance and your own sector regulator's material, both free and both written for UK practitioners.
If you need something a UK employer treats as a qualification, funded routes are the category to look at, and they cost the learner nothing.
How to make free courses actually count
Finish one rather than starting four. A completed short course beats three abandoned long ones on every measure.
Apply something within a week. Everything not applied within a week is forgotten, whatever the course quality.
Pick a recurring task at work, time ten instances before and after, and write down what you found.
That measurement is the thing an interviewer asks about, and no free course will produce it for you.
Key takeaways
- Vendor learning paths are the best free material and rarely rank well in search.
- Google's short courses are good for confirming interest in two evenings.
- University platform courses are free to audit, with the certificate paid.
- Avoid anything recorded in 2023 and never updated.
- Apply one thing within a week or the course was entertainment.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI course?
Vendor learning paths from Microsoft and AWS go deepest and are free. Google's short courses are the most finishable. All three are better than most paid options.
Are free AI courses any good?
The vendor ones are excellent because they are current and written by the people who built the systems. Quality elsewhere varies enormously.
Can I get a free certificate?
Google and IBM issue completion certificates free. University platforms let you audit free and charge for the certificate, with financial aid available.
How long do free AI courses take?
Short introductory courses take five to ten hours. Vendor learning paths take 20 to 40. University courses run four to twelve weeks.
Which free courses should I avoid?
Anything recorded in 2023 and never updated, anything with countdown pricing, and long video series with no exercises.
Do free courses need coding?
Introductory and vendor foundational material does not. University data science and machine learning courses generally assume Python.
How do I make a free course count?
Finish one rather than starting four, and apply something to a real task within a week. Time ten instances before and after.
Is free enough to change career?
Rarely on its own, because nothing is externally assessed. Pair it with measured applied work, which is what interviews actually test.
The funded route, in figures
Figures are the England position. Levy-paying employers usually draw the whole cost from the levy they already contribute, so they pay nothing extra. Employers below the £3 million pay bill threshold pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24. For an older apprentice the government funds 95 per cent, and a levy transfer from a larger employer can cover the rest. Eligibility and funding rules are set by the funding body and can change.
Where to go next
If you have finished the free material and want something assessed, the funded route examines your own work at no cost to you.
