Microsoft AI-900: Cost and Whether It Is Worth It

AI-900 is the cheapest recognisable AI certificate a UK worker can get. That is its main strength and also the reason to be honest about what it proves.

Direct answer

AI-900 is Microsoft's entry-level Azure AI Fundamentals exam. It costs under £100 in the UK, takes most people 20 to 30 hours to prepare for, and is worth taking if your employer already runs Microsoft. It proves familiarity with Azure AI services rather than the ability to build anything.

Check if it is funded for you

Based on the AI and Automation Practitioner standard (ST1512), a Level 4 apprenticeship for people already in work. Funding rules described here are the England position and are set by the funding body.

Potentially free for you

The learner never pays. Employers potentially pay nothing either, and where the apprentice is aged 16 to 24 the government funds the whole cost even if the employer does not pay the levy.

Closing any gap. A levy transfer from another employer covers 100% of the cost. Unused transfer allowance is not carried forward at the end of the tax year, and it must be agreed before the apprentice starts.

From 1 August 2026 the government stopped adding the 10% top-up to new funds entering levy accounts, so there is less in the system than there was.

What the exam actually covers

AI-900 tests recall across five areas. Core AI concepts, machine learning on Azure, computer vision, natural language processing, and generative AI features.

None of it requires you to write code. The questions ask which Azure service fits a described scenario, and which principles apply to responsible use.

That shape matters. You are being asked to recognise the right product name, not to build the thing. Preparation is memorisation with some understanding on top.

How hard it is, honestly

Most people pass with 20 to 30 hours of preparation. If you already work around Microsoft 365 or Azure, closer to 20.

The difficulty is not conceptual. It is that the service names are similar and the exam relies on you telling them apart under time pressure.

The commonest reason people fail is skipping the practice questions. The Microsoft Learn modules are free and genuinely sufficient, but reading them is not the same as answering questions against a clock.

It is a 45 minute exam sat online or at a test centre. You get the result immediately.

What it costs in the UK

The exam fee sits under £100 for UK candidates. Microsoft has changed fundamentals pricing before, so check the current figure on the Microsoft Learn site before booking.

The learning material costs nothing. Microsoft Learn carries the full syllabus free, which is unusual and worth using.

Add a retake in your budget if you are nervous. A failed sitting costs the full fee again unless you bought an exam replay bundle.

Microsoft periodically runs free voucher events tied to virtual training days. If you are not in a hurry, waiting for one is a legitimate way to sit it for nothing.

Who should take it and who should not

Take it if your organisation runs Microsoft and you want a low-cost signal that you can talk about AI services credibly. It maps onto tools already on your desktop.

Take it if you are applying for roles where an applicant tracking system is likely to screen on named certificates.

Skip it if your employer runs AWS or Google Cloud. A badge for a platform your team does not use answers a question nobody asked.

Skip it if you want proof you can apply AI to your own work. The exam does not look at your work, and an interviewer will.

What it will not do for you

It will not qualify you for a technical role. AI-900 sits below the associate exams and everyone hiring knows that.

It will not, on its own, change your salary. Pay follows responsibility, and a fundamentals badge does not carry responsibility with it.

It will not stay current forever. Azure AI services get renamed and restructured regularly, and a badge from three years ago describes a product catalogue that has moved on.

Key takeaways

  • Under £100, 20 to 30 hours, and Microsoft Learn covers the whole syllabus free.
  • It proves familiarity with Azure AI services, not the ability to build with them.
  • Only worth it if your workplace already runs Microsoft.
  • Watch for Microsoft virtual training day vouchers if you can wait.
  • It gets you read by a screening system. It does not answer the interview question.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI-900 worth it in 2026?

Yes if your employer runs Microsoft and you want a cheap recognisable signal. No if you use AWS or Google Cloud, or if you need proof you can apply AI to real work.

How much does AI-900 cost in the UK?

Under £100 for UK candidates at current pricing. Microsoft has changed fundamentals exam fees before, so check the Microsoft Learn site before you book.

How hard is the AI-900 exam?

Not conceptually hard. Most people pass with 20 to 30 hours of preparation. The difficulty is telling similar Azure service names apart under time pressure.

Do I need coding for AI-900?

No. There is no code in the exam. It asks which service fits a scenario and which responsible AI principle applies.

How long is AI-900 valid for?

Microsoft fundamentals certifications do not expire. That said, the Azure service catalogue changes, so an old badge describes an older product set.

Can I get AI-900 for free?

The learning material on Microsoft Learn is free. Microsoft periodically issues free exam vouchers through virtual training day events, which is the usual free route to the exam itself.

Is AI-900 enough to get a job?

On its own, no. It helps you get past keyword screening and gives you something to discuss. The offer comes from what you can show you have done.

Should I do AI-900 or an apprenticeship?

They answer different questions. AI-900 proves exam recall on one vendor's products. A funded apprenticeship produces assessed evidence from your own job and costs the learner nothing.

The funded route, in figures

Level 4Apprenticeship standard ST1512
14 monthsAround six hours a week, online
£0Cost to the learner, always
£0Employer cost for ages 16 to 24. Older apprentices are 95 per cent government funded, and a levy transfer can cover the rest
No minimumWeekly hours to qualify

Figures are the England position. Levy-paying employers usually draw the whole cost from the levy they already contribute, so they pay nothing extra. Employers below the £3 million pay bill threshold pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24. For an older apprentice the government funds 95 per cent, and a levy transfer from a larger employer can cover the rest. Eligibility and funding rules are set by the funding body and can change.

Where to go next

If you want a credential assessed on your own work rather than a product catalogue, the funded Level 4 route is worth checking. It costs the learner nothing and takes around six hours a week.
