What Is an AI Apprenticeship? A Plain-English Guide for UK Employees and Employers
Share
“AI apprenticeship” is a phrase you’ll hear more and more, but what does it actually mean, who is it for, and how does it work? Here’s the plain-English version, with no jargon.
What an AI apprenticeship actually is
An AI apprenticeship is a structured training programme that helps someone already in work build practical, job-ready artificial-intelligence skills, while they keep doing their job. It isn’t a full-time course you leave work for; it’s designed to fit around your role, with the skills applied to real tasks as you learn them.
Our programme is a Level 4 apprenticeship that runs over roughly 14 months, with monthly masterclasses and support built around your working life.
Who it’s for
- Employees in a role who want to add AI skills that make them more effective and more valuable at work.
- Employers who want to upskill their team in AI without pulling people out of their jobs for weeks on end.
You don’t need to be technical or a “coder” to start, the programme is built to take people from where they are.
How it works, month by month
- Built around your job. The learning maps onto your actual role, so what you study you can use the same week.
- Monthly masterclasses. Structured sessions cover the AI skills that matter most for modern workplaces.
- Applied, not just theory. You practise on real tasks, so the skills stick and show up in your work.
- Support throughout. You’re guided across the full ~14 months, not left to figure it out alone.
What you’ll actually learn
The focus is practical, job-ready AI: understanding what today’s AI tools can and can’t do, using them safely and effectively in a work setting, improving everyday productivity, and knowing how to apply AI to real problems in your role. The aim is confidence and capability you can use on Monday morning, not abstract theory.
What about the cost?
The programme is worth around £18,000 per person, it is potentially fully funded for employers, so eligible learners take part at no cost to themselves. Apprenticeship training in England is paid for through the apprenticeship levy and government co-investment, not by the employee. Eligibility applies, you’ll typically need to be employed, aged 16 or over, with your employer’s support, and places on the current intake are limited. The quickest way to check where you stand is a short eligibility check.
How to get started
The simplest next step is a quick, no-obligation chat about your role (or your team) and whether the programme is a fit. Get in touch here, or read more about how it works for employees and employers.

Who is the Level 4 AI apprenticeship for?
You need to be employed, aged 16 or over, and have a line manager who can sign off your timesheets. Your employer needs to be happy for you to attend. You also commit to a monthly remote masterclass and to the full 14 month programme.
What does the AI apprenticeship cost?
For levy-paying employers the training is fully funded from the levy they already pay, and a levy transfer can cover the balance if those funds run short. Government funding covers all of the cost for apprentices aged 16 to 24. For those aged 25 and over it covers 95 per cent, and a levy transfer from a larger employer can cover the rest. A larger employer can pledge unused levy funds to cover that share, if you apply and are accepted. The learner never pays anything.
How long does it take and how is it delivered?
It is the Level 4 Artificial Intelligence and Automation Practitioner apprenticeship, a national standard. It runs for around 14 months, is studied online around your job, and has no entry requirements. It ends with an independent End-Point Assessment.
