Unused apprenticeship levy: are you leaving money on the table?

If your business pays the apprenticeship levy, there’s a good chance some of it is quietly going to waste. Levy funds don’t sit in your account forever — and an AI apprenticeship is one of the smartest ways to put them to use before they disappear.

THE BIT THAT STINGS

Unused apprenticeship levy funds expire after 24 months and return to the Treasury. Money your business has already paid simply disappears if it is not spent on training.Source: gov.uk apprenticeship levy guidance.

How the levy works — and why it expires

Employers with an annual pay bill over £3 million pay 0.5% of it into the apprenticeship levy. That money sits in a digital account ring-fenced for training — but it doesn’t last indefinitely. Unused levy funds expire on a rolling basis (typically after 24 months), at which point they’re gone. In effect, money you’ve already paid simply vanishes if you don’t spend it.

You’ve already paid — so use it

This is the key point: the levy isn’t a new cost. You’re contributing it either way. The only question is whether you get something for it. Funding a Level 4 AI apprenticeship from your levy means a degree-level, AI-skilled team member for, in effect, money you’d otherwise lose. See exactly how it works on our AI apprenticeship cost & the levy page.

Why AI is a smart use of it

Of all the things to train your team in right now, AI delivers some of the fastest, most visible returns — saved hours, better decisions, a more competitive business. Turning a use-it-or-lose-it fund into exactly the capability your business needs next is about as good as it gets.

Not sure how much you have?

Many employers genuinely don’t know their levy balance — and that’s often where the waste hides. We can help you understand what’s available and turn it into funded AI training. It’s one of the biggest funded training opportunities in the UK right now. Learn more about AI apprenticeships for employers or the fully funded AI apprenticeship.

AI Skills Training arranges AI apprenticeship training delivered by approved, RoATP-registered training partners; the qualification is awarded following independent end-point assessment. Funding and levy rules are set by the relevant funding bodies and are subject to eligibility, confirmed before enrolment. “Degree level” refers to a Level 4 qualification.

How to put it to work before it expires

If you pay the levy, the funds are already yours — the only question is whether you spend them or lose them. Putting them towards an AI and Automation Practitioner place turns a sunk cost into a genuine capability upgrade for your team, at no extra outlay.

And if you have more in your levy pot than you can use, you can transfer up to a quarter of it to another employer — a supplier, a smaller partner, or a business in your network — rather than letting it lapse.

Key takeaways

  • Levy funds expire after 24 months — use them or lose them.
  • Spending them on training turns a sunk cost into capability.
  • You can transfer unused levy to another employer.
  • An AI apprenticeship is a high-value way to spend the pot.
