What is the Level 4 AI apprenticeship? (And why it might be free for you)
Share
Artificial intelligence is changing nearly every job in the country — and the people who learn to use it well are becoming more valuable, not less. The Level 4 AI apprenticeship is one of the clearest ways to build those skills properly, and for many people it is completely funded. Here is what it actually is.
97% of UK organisations say they face an AI skills gap. This qualification was built to close exactly that gap — turning everyday professionals into people who can put AI to work safely and well.Source: gov.uk AI Labour Market Survey, 2025.
A degree-level qualification in AI
The Level 4 AI apprenticeship is a nationally recognised, degree-level qualification — a programme worth around £18,000 — designed for people already in work. Rather than abstract theory, you learn by applying AI to your own role and real projects, so the skills land immediately. It runs for about 14 months, is delivered 100% online, and takes roughly six hours a week. There are no academic entry requirements.
Who it is for
It is open to almost anyone employed and working 30 or more hours a week, in nearly any role or sector — marketing, admin, operations, finance, customer service and more. If you already use a computer at work, you can do this. You do not need to be technical.
What you learn
You build genuine, applied confidence with AI: using today’s AI tools to get reliable results, working with data, automating repetitive tasks, using AI responsibly and safely, and applying it to real problems in your workplace. You can see the full course breakdown here.
Is it really free?
For most people, the cost is covered by government apprenticeship funding. If your employer pays the apprenticeship levy, it is fully funded — nothing to pay. If they do not pay the levy, the government funds 95% and the employer contributes just 5% (around £900 on an £18,000 programme). The individual learner never pays. We explain it all on our AI apprenticeship cost & the levy page, and you can read more about the fully funded AI apprenticeship itself.
Why it is such a big opportunity
A recognised, degree-level qualification in the most in-demand skill of the decade — earned around your job, with no student debt, and often at no cost — is one of the biggest funded training opportunities in the UK right now. For employers, it is a route to a sharper, more productive team for a fraction of the usual cost; see AI apprenticeships for employers.

What ‘degree level’ actually means
Level 4 sits at the first stage of higher education — above A-levels and broadly equivalent to the first year of a degree. It is a recognised national standard (the Artificial Intelligence and Automation Practitioner), not an informal course or a certificate of attendance.
The learning is applied from day one: your team member works on real projects in your business, builds practical skills with AI and automation tools, and finishes with an independent final assessment carried out by an outside body. That independence is what gives the qualification its weight with employers.
Key takeaways
- It’s a recognised, degree-level national qualification — not a short course.
- It runs around 14 months and ends with an independent final assessment.
- It’s built for everyday professionals, not just software engineers.
- It’s funded up to £18,000 per learner, often at no cost to the employer.
