AI Data Practitioner Level 3
Level 3 apprenticeship standard
Built for people who already work with data as part of the day job, and want to do it properly with AI tools alongside them.
Check if it is funded for youRead the plain English guideIn short
The AI Data Practitioner Level 3 is a UK apprenticeship running 8 to 13 months online. It needs around 6 working hours a week. You finish with the Data Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship. Levy-paying employers are usually fully funded, and for other employers the government funds all of it for an apprentice aged 16 to 24. The learner never pays.
Who this is for
Anyone whose role involves data and spreadsheets. It runs across retail, finance, healthcare, education, technology, legal and property.
Job titles it commonly suits
- Customer service
- HR
- Administration
- Receptionists
- Managers
- Finance
Who this is not for
Worth being blunt. The wrong fit wastes a year and can cost your employer the funding.
You do not touch data in your actual job
The whole assessment is a portfolio built from real work. If your role never involves data, there is nothing to evidence and you will stall at End Point Assessment.
You want to become a data scientist
This is a Level 3 technician standard. It covers Python and R as an introduction, not as a route into modelling roles. Look at Level 4 and beyond for that.
Your employer will not protect the hours
Six working hours a week is a funding condition, not a suggestion. If that time gets swallowed every week, you will fall behind and the employer may lose the funding.
You want a short course
The on-programme phase alone is 8 to 13 months before assessment starts. A two-day Excel course may serve you better.
You expect the AI to check itself
The tools will happily produce a confident wrong answer. If you are not able to sanity check a number, AI makes the error faster rather than catching it.
Your data lives somewhere you cannot reach
If the systems are locked down and you only receive exports, you will struggle to evidence sourcing, cleaning and migration.
What you actually study
You will work with Excel, Power BI, Python, SQL, Numpy, Pandas and R.
How the programme runs
-
Enrolment and initial review
Eligibility checked, paperwork signed, and your starting point assessed against the standard.
-
On programme, 8 to 13 months
Live online workshops each month of three to four hours, a monthly one to one with your tutor, and a progress review every ten weeks. Class sizes cap at ten.
-
Building the portfolio
Expect to evidence a data cleaning job you took from mess to usable, a report you automated that used to be manual, and a visualisation someone non-technical acted on.
-
End Point Assessment, up to 3 months
A portfolio of evidence, an evaluative report, a presentation and a professional discussion.
-
Where it leads
Progression routes include Level 4 AI Data Specialist, or higher education.
What your portfolio will actually contain
Assessors look for the decision that followed the data, not the size of the dataset. A tidy 200-row report that changed a process beats a 200,000-row export nobody opened.
What a typical week looks like
Most of the six hours goes on your own data work, deliberately captured as evidence rather than done twice.
A monthly workshop covers the module, a monthly one to one keeps the portfolio honest, and the rest is applying what you learned to whatever your organisation actually needs counting.
What you need before you start
- Be employed in, or hired into, a role with data technician responsibilities
- Be working on real data projects that can evidence your skills
- Have employer support for around 6 working hours a week of training
There are no academic entry requirements. What matters is that the job gives you real work to evidence.
What it costs
Funded through the apprenticeship levy and government co-investment.
Employers with an annual pay bill over £3 million pay the levy. For the AI Data Practitioner route the same rules apply as any other apprenticeship standard. Funding rules are set by the funding body and can change, so check before committing.
Common questions
What qualification does the AI Data Practitioner apprenticeship give you?
The Data Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship. It is a national apprenticeship standard, so it is recognised outside the organisation you train with.
How long is the AI Data Practitioner apprenticeship?
8 to 13 months on programme, then End Point Assessment over up to 3 months. The range depends on how quickly you gather portfolio evidence in your own role.
How many hours a week does it need?
Around 6 working hours a week, protected by your employer. That time is a funding condition rather than a recommendation, so agree it before you enrol.
What does the AI Data Practitioner apprenticeship cost?
Nothing to you. In England it is funded through the apprenticeship levy and government co-investment. Levy-paying employers usually draw it from the levy they already pay. Other employers pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24, and for one aged 25 or over the government funds 95 per cent, with a levy transfer able to cover the rest.
Do I need qualifications to start?
No academic entry requirements. What you do need is a customer service type role with genuine work to evidence, because the assessment is built from what you actually do.
How is it assessed?
A portfolio drawn from your own work, an evaluative report, a presentation and a professional discussion. The portfolio is the part that takes planning, so start capturing evidence in week one.
Is it delivered online?
Yes, live online workshops rather than recorded video. Monthly sessions of three to four hours, a monthly one to one, and a review every ten weeks. Class sizes cap at ten.
What comes after the AI Data Practitioner apprenticeship?
Progression routes include Level 4 AI Data Specialist, or higher education.
