In short

The IT Systems Support Lead Level 4 is a UK apprenticeship running 8 to 15 months online. It needs around 6 hours a week of off-the-job training. You finish with the Applications Support Lead Level 4. Levy-paying employers are usually fully funded, and for other employers the government funds all of it for an apprentice aged 16 to 24. The learner never pays.

Who this is for

Sectors where application support matters most, including law, finance, technology and the public sector.

Job titles it commonly suits

  • Application support analyst
  • Applications analyst
  • Support team lead
  • Technical support engineer
  • Application support manager
  • Systems analyst

Who this is not for

Worth being blunt. The wrong fit wastes a year and can cost your employer the funding.

You are new to application support

This is Level 4 and assumes you already work in support. Start at Digital AI Support Practitioner or IT and Cloud Practitioner.

You do not own any process or change

The standard expects you to lead upgrades, implementations and change projects. Purely reactive ticket work will not evidence it.

You are not client or stakeholder facing

A large part of this is communicating with stakeholders and delivering training to colleagues. Back-office only roles struggle to evidence that.

You want a management qualification

This is technical leadership of applications, not people management. A team leader standard would suit that better.

You have no budget or authority

Leading change needs some standing. If every decision is escalated above you, the leadership criteria are hard to evidence.

Your applications never change

The standard leans on upgrades, testing and implementation. A frozen estate gives you nothing to lead.

What you actually study

You will work with IT tools and platforms for troubleshooting, support desk management, testing and implementation.

Introduction and role awarenessAwareness of your role within the stakeholder environment, and continuous self-learning.
Communication and collaborationCommunicating with stakeholders, professionalism, collaboration, and roles within multidisciplinary teams.
Receiving and identifying issuesAssessing impact on user experience, categorising and prioritising requests.
Analyse and planProblem solving, root cause against effects, application lifecycle implementation.
Remote working and collaborative platformsWorking and supporting effectively across remote and collaborative platforms.
Data and ethicsData combination and ethical use.

How the programme runs

  1. Enrolment and initial review

Eligibility checked, paperwork signed, and your starting point assessed against the standard.

  2. On programme, 8 to 15 months

Live online workshops each month of three to four hours, a monthly one to one with your tutor, and a progress review every ten weeks. Class sizes cap at ten.

  3. Building the portfolio

Expect to evidence a change project you led, a root cause analysis that stopped a recurring problem, and training or advice you delivered to colleagues.

  4. End Point Assessment, up to 6 months

A portfolio of evidence, an evaluative report, a presentation and a professional discussion.

  5. Where it leads

Progression routes include Level 5 apprenticeship pathways, or higher education.

What your portfolio will actually contain

At Level 4 the assessor is looking for ownership. Being involved is not the same as being responsible, and the portfolio has to show the difference.

What a typical week looks like

Six hours of off-the-job training, though at Level 4 much of it overlaps with work you should already be leading.

The constraint is rarely time, it is access. You need your manager to hand you a change project early rather than in month ten.

What you need before you start

  • Be employed in, or moving into, a role with application support responsibilities
  • Be working on real support tasks that demonstrate practical technical skill
  • Have employer support for around 6 hours a week of off-the-job training

There are no academic entry requirements. What matters is that the job gives you real work to evidence.

What it costs

Funded through the apprenticeship levy and government co-investment.

£0
If your employer pays the levy, funded from money they already contribute
£0
If they do not pay the levy, for an apprentice aged 16 to 24, with government funding 95% for anyone older
£0
To you, the learner, in every case

Employers with an annual pay bill over £3 million pay the levy. For the IT Systems Support Lead route the same rules apply as any other apprenticeship standard. Funding rules are set by the funding body and can change, so check before committing.

Common questions

What qualification does the IT Systems Support Lead apprenticeship give you?

The Applications Support Lead Level 4. It is a national apprenticeship standard, so it is recognised outside the organisation you train with.

How long is the IT Systems Support Lead apprenticeship?

8 to 15 months on programme, then End Point Assessment over up to 6 months. The range depends on how quickly you gather portfolio evidence in your own role.

How many hours a week does it need?

Around 6 hours a week of off-the-job training, protected by your employer. That time is a funding condition rather than a recommendation, so agree it before you enrol.

What does the IT Systems Support Lead apprenticeship cost?

Nothing to you. In England it is funded through the apprenticeship levy and government co-investment. Levy-paying employers usually draw it from the levy they already pay. Other employers pay nothing for an apprentice aged 16 to 24, and for one aged 25 or over the government funds 95 per cent, with a levy transfer able to cover the rest.

Do I need qualifications to start?

No academic entry requirements. What you do need is a application support analyst type role with genuine work to evidence, because the assessment is built from what you actually do.

How is it assessed?

A portfolio drawn from your own work, an evaluative report, a presentation and a professional discussion. The portfolio is the part that takes planning, so start capturing evidence in week one.

Is it delivered online?

Yes, live online workshops rather than recorded video. Monthly sessions of three to four hours, a monthly one to one, and a review every ten weeks. Class sizes cap at ten.

What comes after the IT Systems Support Lead apprenticeship?

Progression routes include Level 5 apprenticeship pathways, or higher education.
